Detroit Sound Conference III
Call for Papers
10 am – 8 pm October 15, 2016
Detroit, MI

Keynote Speaker: Melvin Davis (pictured above)

This event is free and open to the public.

The Detroit Sound Conservancy (DSC), a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the region’s sonic heritage, will host its 3rd annual conference on Saturday, October 15, 2016 in Detroit.

This year’s conference will coincide with what would have been the 100th birthday of James T. Jenkins (1916-1994), the founder of the Graystone International Jazz Museum. Beginning in 1974, Jenkins and the GIJM worked tirelessly to restore the Graystone legacy, build an astonishing array of Detroit jazz artifacts, and educate both young and old on the importance of music for our cultural imaginations.

In that spirit, it is our hope that our conference will foster interdisciplinary conversations between scholars, artists, archivists, activists, journalists, urban planners, business leaders, and anyone else interested in discussing the ways in which Detroit’s musical heritage can be protected, presented, and activated.

While all individual paper, presentation, panel, film, and exhibit proposals will be considered, the conference organizers also suggest the following as areas of interest:

  • The role of musical heritage in the revitalization of the city, particularly in neighborhoods; connecting communities through sound.
  • Measuring music’s impact: quantifying music’s effects on the city, and potentials for transformation
  • Place-making through music
  • Citizen archiving both analog and digital

Last year’s conference featured more than 20 local and national speakers who presented on a wide range of topics, from historic preservation to the legacy of electro.

The deadline for proposals is Friday, August 19, 2016.

Single presentations should be 15-20 minutes long, panels 60-75 minutes, plus Q & A.

Please send a 250-word abstract plus 50-word author (s) bio and contact info to Executive Director Dr. Carleton Gholz via c at detroitsoundconservancy.org

Just seeing this call for papers. I would like to either have a panel or present a talk on the recently announced rebranding of Detroit as a “Music City” and the building of a Detroit Music Museum.

Great. Please send us an email by Friday in the form we’ve suggested above and we’ll consider it. Thank you.
