Positions

The Detroit Sound Conservancy in Detroit, Michigan seeks highly motivated individuals who can work independently and as part of a team. This will be an approximately 10-15 hour per week unpaid internship for January through April 2016.

The DSC Intern will work directly with the DSC’s Executive Director, and where appropriate the Director of Archives, to create a consistent presence in Detroit on the ground, through social media, and in our museum / archive space at United Sound Systems Recording Studios.

In addition to regular social networking upkeep and outreach, including regular work with Detroit’s LocalWiki (http://localwiki.net/detroit/), DSC Interns will on the following projects:

Music Library

The Intern will help to survey, inventory, arrange, describe, and exhibit our growing music library of albums, 78s, Edison diamond discs, CDs, cassettes, and micro-cassettes.

Visual Archives

The Intern will help to survey, inventory, arrange, describe, and exhibit our growing visual library of photographs, posters, VHS tapes, and DVDs.

Manuscript Archive, Vertical File, and Print Collection

The Intern will help to survey, inventory, arrange, describe, and exhibit our growing manuscript archives as well as maintain our vertical file. In addition, this Intern would maintain and expand our book and magazine collection.

Museum Exhibits

The Intern will help to survey, inventory, arrange, describe, and exhibit our growing exhibit assets including many exhibit materials originally acquired, maintained, and exhibited by the former Graystone International Jazz Museum. This intern will also be central in the maintenance and expansion of our mobile exhibit currently located at the Detroit Institute of Music Education (DIME).

Tour Program

The Intern will help plan and promote our tour program.

Qualifications

Potential academic qualifications include coursework in library sciences, museums, oral history, history, popular music, music industry, music production, entertainment marketing, urban studies, folklore, and/or related field.

In addition to trustworthiness, the candidate must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

— Outgoing personality interested in developing and maintaining relationships
— Social media experience
— Wide-based musical knowledge is a plus
— Attention to detail
