Social Studies Boston and the Detroit Sound Conservancy are proud to present a special night of dance music featuring Brooklyn-based, Detroit-raised, DJ Mike Servito.
Now in his 20th year as a DJ, Servito grew up in the belly of Detroit’s early-1990s rave scene, eventually following its waveforms from Detroit to Brooklyn where he has now established himself as a key resident within New York City’s long-revered DJ culture.
He is honored to be playing a very special Detroit-style set for an urban soundscape that has meant so much to him. Born in Detroit (with his Mother singing songs by the Supremes to him “before I was old enough to walk”), Servito connected to his own generation’s musical dreams through Detroit radio in the 1980s, where characters like The Electrifying Mojo and The Wizard came to life through car speakers and bedside radios. “Growing up listening to Detroit radio changed me forever. It is part of my DNA. It is embedded in my soul.” Thirty years later, those influences speak through Servito’s online mixes on Soundcloud, resident sets at The Bunker in Brooklyn, and tour nights across the country and beyond.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Detroit Sound Conservancy in their efforts to preserve the indigenous musical history of a city that Boston’s DJs, producers, and dancers have long loved and respected. This is especially true for Social Studies residents Alfredo Rico-Dimas and Brenden Wesley, who have already brought important Detroit dance figures to the Hub over the last year like Dan Bell and Omar S. The Social Studies logo even evokes the “Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit” compilation from 1988.
The night is also special for DSC Founder Carleton Gholz who is currently finishing a three-year postdoc in Boston this spring and then returning to Detroit to work on the DSC full time. Gholz remembers meeting Servito in 1994. “Mike has always had visual and sonic style, from the first time I met him. He has been teaching my ears and eyes for 20 years. I’m proud to help bring him to Boston, and humbled by his support for the Conservancy.”
For Mike, as well as the whole “Boston Loves Detroit” crew, the message is simple. “As a lover of Detroit music, I support the Detroit Sound Conservancy in preserving Detroit’s musical legacy and keeping the spirit of the music alive.”
