Abstract: The Harold McKinney Music and Manuscripts document the life and work of composer, jazz pianist, and educator Harold McKinney (1928-2001). McKinney had a long career in Detroit music, playing with jazz giants such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Charlie Parker; local jazz greats like Kenny Burrell, Wendall Harrison, and Teddy Harris; and inspiring and teaching the next generation of Detroit jazz icons such as Marion Hayden and his daughter, drummer Gayelynn McKinney. The collection includes papers relating to the establishment and running of Tribe Collective and McKinney Arts, his two major recording and education organizations; planning documents, including budgets, contracts, and evaluations for various tours and concerts; grant proposals; personal and professional correspondence; and notes and drafts of musical and lyrical compositions. In addition to the manuscripts, there is an extensive collection of scores, as well as some audio recordings, of McKinney’s many compositions. There is also supplemental digital material including clippings, digitized audio recordings, and photographs. This collection was previously damaged in a flood, so some material may be restricted due to ongoing preservation concerns. Please contact info@detroitsound.org for more information.
