Above: Excerpts from St. Agnes Choir’s Joyful Sounds Tea program, 1983. From the Jacqueline Mahome Church Music Papers.

Abstract: The Jacqueline Mahome Church Music and Manuscripts chronicle two decades of Black religious life in Detroit through programs for services and choral concerts, mass schedules, church bulletins, and sheet music. The bulk of the collection is made up of programs for services at Detroit-area Christian churches including Detroit Unity Temple, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Cathedral of Most Blessed Sacrament, and St. Agnes Catholic Church, where Mahome was choral director in the 1980s. These programs, along with the flyers and bulletins that accompany them, are annotated with handwritten notes by Mahome and other churchgoers, offering a glimpse into the vibrant community of Black Christians in Detroit throughout the late 20th century.
