On July 16th, Detroit Sound Conservancy partnered with StoryCorps to activate a session between our adviser Curtis Lispcomb (in photo on left) and his longtime friend Damon “Magic” Percy to discuss their shared history in Detroit dance culture generally and the Club Heaven Sound System in particular. A report from Magic:
“We discussed how music has influenced and shaped our coming out and framed the spaces we have dwelled in, particularly house music for us both. Heaven’s was discussed as an important space that allowed us to be free, housed the cream of DJ’s, gay royalty and that sound that belonged to Detroit and how important it is for us to keep the legacy of our community alive. It was great. More was said, but that was a big highlight and portion.”
We look forward to the final recording which will be archived with the Library of Congress and Detroit Sound Conservancy. You can read more about Storycorps here.
