Abstract: Rod Rodgers was a well-known choreographer raised and trained in Detroit. He moved to New York City in 1962 and began his dance company in 1963. His modern dance pieces often incorporated his background as a percussionist and offered social commentary on the Black experience. This small collection contains material related to Rod Rodgers Dance Company’s residency in Detroit in 1971 including contracts, schedules, press releases, correspondence, and news clippings. The residency was presented by the Detroit Metropolitan Dance Project. Also present in the collection is material related to efforts to bring the company for a longer Detroit residency, and clippings related to other Rod Rodgers Dance Company shows and residencies outside of Michigan, including Georgia, New York, and Indiana.
