Abstract: The Rob St. Mary Punk Magazines document Metro Detroit’s vibrant independent publishing scene in the 1990s. The bulk of the collection is a comprehensive run of Orbit magazines from 1996-1999, when Orbit ceased publishing. These magazines feature interviews with Detroit artists such as Insane Clown Posse, music and film reviews, calendars of concerts and events in Metro Detroit, and plenty of irreverent write-ups dissecting nineties fashion, music, and culture. Metro Detroit’s various subcultures are well-represented through ads for dance nights, venues, clothing, and record stores. In addition to Orbit, the collection also features a few issues of Fun and Real Detroit Weekly from 1999, and five 2020-2022 issues of the quarterly Maggot Brain published by Third Man Records. For many years, Rob St. Mary was the founder, creator, and webmaster of detroitpunkarchive.com, which is currently only accessible through the Wayback Machine. More of St. Mary’s papers are held at the Bentley Historical Library as part of the Rob St. Mary Papers. St. Mary is also the author of The Orbit Magazine Anthology, a comprehensive history of Orbit, Fun, and White Noise.
