Knight Foundation Arts Challenge 2015
In 2004, longtime local musician and artist Mark Dancey created the “A Century of Sound” poster for the Metro Times. The poster featured hundreds of musicians and groups, along with numerous caricatures, building out like a tree, from roots to branch, across the 20th century. The poster was given away in the paper. However, ten years later, the online .pdf file is gone and there is no public archive of MT magazines that exist outside of the company’s offices. For this project, the Detroit Sound Conservancy will help Mark Dancey revise and reproduce the poster as a mural in an as yet undetermined public space. Dancey’s profound vision of musical connections across time and identity should inspire further generations of musicians as well as their fellow Detroiters. A “Detroit Industry”-style mural for music would do the job.
